POSITION: Dentist
SCHEDULE: Part-Time (8-16 hours/week available)
FACILITY: Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority - Abingdon (8 hours/week) + can be combined with Duffield (8 hours/week)
LOCATION: Abingdon, VA

POSITION SUMMARY
- Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Dentist is responsible and accountable for supervising the dental staff and managing the dental activity as well as for providing oral health care to patients such as fillings, extractions, dentures, root canals, etc. Utilizes electronic medical record system as applicable throughout the scope of duties and responsibilities.
- Provides preventative and restorative treatment to all inmates following Wexford Health and facility policies and guidance.
- Performs and interprets radiographic examinations as indicated.
- Performs operative dentistry including appropriate repair of caries, extractions, root canals, etc.
- Repairs/fits proper prosthetic devices.
- Supervise staff in: cleaning of teeth, making impressions for prosthetic devices, planning and maintaining an oral hygiene program, completing appropriate records accurately and all procedures associated with the provision of dental care.
- Arrange proper referral for procedures that cannot be performed on-site at facility following Wexford Health and facility guidance for referral.
- Serves as clinical authority on all matters related to the delivery of dental services, and provides direction, guidance, and oversight to the dental staff and programs.
- Examines patients and documents findings in the inmate patient’s medical record utilizing the standard forms within the EMR, utilizing applicable dental classification systems (i.e., APHA).
The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
LICENSING: Current, valid Virginia Dentist license
CERTIFICATION: Current CPR Certification
EDUCATION: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) degree
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Minimum 1 year practicing dentistry. Correctional experience preferred. Supervisory experience preferred. Prior experience with use of electronic medical record system.
