Company Information
Overview
Since 1994, we’ve supported dentists through PRIVATE PRACTICE +™, creating the synergy between your focus on Clinical Excellence and our business support expertise. In supporting you, we handle the administrative tasks so that you can concentrate on providing the best dental care to your patients. That way, you have more time to live your life, whether its volunteering in your community, spending more time with family or pursuing other interests.
Career Path
Your career path begins as an Associate Dentist in a PDS supported office. Whether you are a recent grad or practiced for some time you won’t be alone. You will have plenty of other dental professionals supporting you; to confer and collaborate with as you continue to grow in your career. As an Associate Dentist, you’ll also have the opportunity to become an owner of an office. If you’d like to learn more about becoming an Owner Dentist? Learn more at our Owner Dentist page.
Compensation
The average full-time PDS affiliated Associate Dentist earns $160,000 in their first year. By their fifth year, their average income increases to $220,000. The average income for a PDS-supported Owner Dentist, whose practice has been open at least two years, is $390,000. If you’d like to learn more about a career as a dentist, take a look at our Associate Dentist page.
Expectations When You Join
Through the PDS Institute, you’ll participate in the Introduction to Clinical Excellence Essentials (ICEE) program. This program introduces you to the modern dentistry environment that you’ll be working in and prepares you to provide the quality of dentistry your patients expect. After completing ICEE, you have the opportunity to pursue the Advanced and Mastery Clinical Excellence Programs. Learn more about the PDS Institute.
As a new Owner Dentist you’ll participate in New Owner Orientation, a year-long program designed for the challenges and considerations an Owner Dentist faces when leading a practice. The course teaches leadership skills and how to build a culture that inspires people to reach their potential. Interested in becoming an Owner Dentist? Learn more at our Owner Dentist page.

Company History
PDS History
Starting a company from scratch isn’t as difficult as it sounds. It’s actually a lot harder. Before Pacific Dental Services® officially started in 1994, so much work and effort went into learning how dental practices operate – from payroll and taxes, to implementing new technology and dealing with insurance companies. So really, the story starts before PDS even opened as a company.
PDS At A Glance
PDS started in 1994, supporting its first office in Costa Mesa, Calif.
By 1997, PDS grew to more than 20 supported offices.
As of year 2016, PDS currently has more than 500 supported offices throughout 17 states.
PDS plans to add more than 50 supported offices each year.
The Beginning Before The Beginning
After graduating from UCLA in 1989, PDS President Stephen Thorne found himself in a tough job market and started working at his father’s Victorville, Calif. dental practice. “My father asked me to put a computer system into his practice, and since I was pretty good with a computer, he asked me to computerize his practice,” Thorne said.
Thorne continued to work for his father, learning the ins-and-outs of dental administration and helping grow the practice from one to five. In 1993, Thorne set out on his own, with a new idea and a vision to create The Greatest Dental Company in America.
PDS Begins
In June 1994, PDS supported its first dental practice in Costa Mesa, Calif. By 1997, the company had grown to support nearly 20 practices. The idea of having someone handle the dental practice’s administrative tasks was taking off with dentists. Dentists wanted to focus on patients and not the everyday aspects of running their own practice.
The Future Of PDS
PDS is still growing, and the future continues to look bright. With plans to expand into four more states and add more than 50 supported offices every year, the vision of becoming The Greatest Dental Company in America is getting closer and closer to reality. If PDS sounds like the place for you, take a look at our current opportunities. We’d love to hear from you.
