Job Description
Position Summary
The Dental Hygienist provides preventive oral health services, patient education, and clinical support in a community-based dental program. This role is essential to promoting oral health, preventing disease, and supporting the overall mission of the health center through compassionate, culturally responsive care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care

Perform dental cleanings (prophylaxis), scaling and root planing, and periodontal maintenance

Take and process dental radiographs in accordance with state regulations

Conduct oral health assessments, periodontal charting, and risk assessments
-
Apply preventive agents including fluoride varnish and sealants
-
Assist in early detection of oral disease and communicate findings to the dentist
Patient Education & Engagement

Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, nutrition, and preventive care

Provide age-appropriate education to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients
-
Support a welcoming, trauma-informed, and patient-centered care environment
Collaboration & Support
-
Work closely with dentists, dental assistants, and other healthcare team members

Participate in integrated care efforts with medical and behavioral health staff as appropriate
-
Support community outreach, school-based programs, and health education initiatives
Documentation & Compliance

Accurately document clinical findings and services in the electronic dental record (EDR)

Adhere to infection control, sterilization, and OSHA protocols
-
Comply with HRSA, FQHC, and North Carolina Dental Practice Act requirements

Participate in quality improvement initiatives, chart reviews, and audits
Required Qualifications

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program
-
Current North Carolina Dental Hygienist license (or eligibility)

CPR/BLS certification
-
Experience working with diverse patient populations or willingness to do so
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an FQHC, community health center, or public health setting
-
Experience serving Medicaid, uninsured, or rural populations
-
Local anesthesia certification (if applicable under NC regulations)

Bilingual skills (Spanish preferred)

Familiarity with electronic dental records
