Job Description
Position Summary
The Dental Hygienist in St. Paul, MN provides preventive and therapeutic oral healthcare services to patients in a community health center setting. This role focuses on oral disease prevention, patient education, and supporting dentists in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care as part of an integrated care team.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Perform dental cleanings (prophylaxis), scaling and root planing, and periodontal maintenance
- Conduct oral health assessments, including periodontal charting and risk assessments
- Take and interpret dental radiographs (x-rays)
- Apply preventive treatments such as fluoride varnish and sealants
- Assist dentists with exams and procedures as needed
- Identify conditions requiring further evaluation and refer to dentist appropriately
Patient Education & Engagement
- Educate patients on oral hygiene techniques, disease prevention, and nutrition
- Promote patient understanding and long-term oral health habits
- Provide compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive care
Collaboration & Program Support
- Work closely with dentists, dental assistants, and front-office staff
- Collaborate with medical and behavioral health teams as part of an integrated care model
- Participate in community outreach, school-based programs, and health education initiatives
Documentation, Compliance & Quality
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic dental record (EDR)
- Follow infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, CDC, and state dental board regulations
- Participate in quality improvement and performance initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program
- Current Minnesota Dental Hygienist license
- Local anesthesia certification (if required by state)
- CPR/BLS certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an FQHC, community health center, or public health setting
- Experience treating Medicaid and underserved populations
- Familiarity with electronic dental records
- Bilingual skills a plus
